CalTrap is a map-based Pest Detection data management application customized to meet California trapping requirements and USDA reporting requirements. CalTrap relies on data from three (3) contributor types to manage trapping surveys and routes, collect data out in the field, and generate trapping reports.

Contributor Types:

  • Administrator – creates and manages surveys and routes
  • Supervisor – manages and assigns routes, manages vehicle pool, grants user access
  • Field Staff – captures trapping data in the field

The Staging environment is used for testing purposes such as: setting up test routes for training, testing new iOS versions, and testing new enhancements before they are added to the production environment. The Production environment is where the actual trapping activities will take place on the Desktop Admin Viewer and the Trapper App.

Administrator Application is accessed through a desktop computer and Chrome browser Trapper Application is accessed from an iPad.

There are many tablet options, but to simplify things we chose one.

Here are our reasons:
1. Keep costs down by using only one development language
2. Simplify training and the creation of training materials
3. Simplify IT support

The mobile version of CalTrap was created combining the VertiGIS Studio Mobile and VertiGIS Studio Workflow products. The company doing this work is called VertiGIS (formerly Latitude Geographics). We have included contact info below.

We have been told by our developer that after we create the first version of this application, future versions that run on other tablets can be done at a reasonable cost. This idea warrants further exploration after we complete our main task.

Yes! The application will work in disconnected mode. Field Staff will have all their maps and data stored in their iPad. They can then sync when they return to the office or come back into cell tower range.

Our goal for statewide deployment is June-July 2021.

We are starting out with Fruit Fly Trapping. Japanese Beetle and Gypsy Moth will be ready after initial deployment. Other programs will be completed as feasible.

Yes if you are doing so as Piggyback trapping with your Fruit Fly trapping. Other GWSS activities will be incorporated in the future.
